Spinal metastases: Is stereotactic body radiation therapy supported by evidences?

Stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) is becoming widely adopted in the treatment of primary and secondary tumors. Spinal bone metastases are frequently discovered in cancer patients, and in the past have been usually treated with a palliative goal. Nevertheless, in some particular clinical settings, such as oligometastatic patients and/or those with a long life expectancy, spinal SBRT could be considered a valid therapeutic option to obtain long-lasting palliation and, when possible, with a curative goal. This review aims to summarize available clinical and dosimetric data of published studies about spinal SBRT.

Abstract Objectives The aim of this paper was to conduct a survey about the evolution of the information provided by Italian radiotherapy departments with a special focus on patients’ perspective. Methods A two-steps analysis was conducted in 2013 and 2020. The Uterus-11 trial was designed to evaluate the role of surgical staging in patients with cervical cancer before primary chemoradiation therapy (CRT). The present report provides the toxicity data stratified by the treatment arm and technique.A total of 255 patients with carcinoma of the uterine cervix (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage IIB-IVA) were randomized to either surgical staging followed by CRT (arm A) or clinical staging followed by CRT (arm B). Impact of the Tiloop Bra mesh in CT images and dose delivery in breast radiotherapy

A new titanized breast mesh, TiLOOP Bra, is currently available for implantation in patients who require radiotherapy. The purpose of this work is to study the dosimetric effect of the presence of a TiLOOP Bra mesh on breast radiation treatment and radiographic imaging. The dosimetric effects have been measured for three X‐ray energies: 1.25 MeV, 6 MV and 18 MV, using radiochromic films placed at three different depths. These depths are representative of mesh location in breast during the radiotherapy treatment and hence, are of interest in this study. Tumor microenvironmental physiology and its implications for radiation oncology.

Abstract The microenvironmental physiology of tumors is uniquely different from that of normal tissues. It is characterized, inter alia, by O 2 depletion (hypoxia, anoxia), glucose and energy deprivation, high lactate levels, and extracellular acidosis, parameters that are anisotropically distributed within the tumor mass. This hostile microenvironment is largely dictated by the abnormal tumor vasculature and heterogeneous microcirculation. Hypoxia and other hostile microenvironmental parameters are known to directly or indirectly confer resistance to irradiation leading to treatment failure.
